"I won't slip away in the night," he promises, and he breathes out, long, slow, relaxed. "I may not be able to overcome my shame as often as I'd like, but even when it bests me, this is the only place I want to be."

"There's always a place for you in my arms, no matter what. No matter what you're feeling, or what you think of yourself... I love you."

Even when he broke her heart, she loved him. It's never faded, not for a moment.

He looks at her, gaze softening until his eyes are misted over.

"I love you, too," he says, and he kisses her, long and tender and sweet.

It's the perfect kiss. So sweet she could weep, and she feels how much he loves her. When it ends, she has to blink away the stars in her vision.

"... one day we'll be wed," she says, just above a whisper.

Just not now.

There’s the shame again. She did hear him. He reaches to take her cheek in his hand and pass his thumb over the swell of her cheek.

“One day,” he agrees. “When it’s right and fair.”

"When you won't manage to convince yourself to regret it," she adds. "I would never want you to feel like it was a mistake, for whatever reason."
